The Consul General at Canton (Spiker) to the Secretary of State

Referring to my telegram of January 29, 4 p.m., last paragraph. Mr. and Mrs. Crofts from Kiensi, Kweichow, have telegraphed from Tating that they are escaping to Szechuan.
Reports available locally indicate that during the past 3 days Communists have been repulsed by Kweiyang Garrison after sanguinary fighting at Lungli and some have moved north to Honghoaifeng from which they threaten the capital. Northern aeroplanes from Chungking and Yunnan reinforcements are alleged to have assisted materially in repulse of enemy. Kwangsi forces apparently still holding.
