24. Having in mind the very limited period of time prior to the proposed date of recognition (January 25), I spoke to the President this morning with a view to’ encouraging acceleration of negotiations. This afternoon the President showed me true reading of telegram sent this afternoon to Crisanto Sacasa in Tegucigalpa urging him that agreement be reached with President Carías today so that Crisanto [Page 247] Sacasa might then return to Guatemala to endeavor to consummate matter with President Ubico priot to January 25.
