Sir: I beg to inclose herewith copy of
statement received through the British embassy, showing awards allotted
to American claimants by the Cretan commission.
In reply to my question as to when, where, and how the money was to be
paid, the English ambassador smilingly remarked that “that is a matter
for the future.”

Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith
a list of claims made by United States citizens in Crete on account
of losses incurred during the Cretan revolutions of 1896, 1897, and
1898, which I have received from his majesty’s consul-general at
Canea for communication to your excellency.
Mr. Howard states that these claims have been examined, together with
those of other foreigners in Crete, by a commission composed of
consuls, and the sums awarded, as stated in the inclosed list, were
ratified by a full consular session held on the 27th of March
last.
