the unexpected demise of His Excellency John Hay, the Secretary of
State, was received with profound regrets at this post of the 10th
instant.

Your Excellency: By direction of His
Excellency the Secretary of State, I have the honor to acknowledge
receipt of your dispatch of current date conveying the sad
intelligence of the demise of His Excellency John Hay, American
Secretary of State, and to express the deep sympathy of the
Government and people of Liberia with the United States in the loss
which she has sustained by the death of one of her most illustrious
citizens.
I am to request you to convey these sentiments to his excellency the
President of the United States.
