2. Whitehead in Morocco. John Whitehead met with King Hassan May 12² to convey your letter to the King³ and to review regional issues. The King criticized Shamir harshly saying his policies were putting Israel in serious danger. He observed that a US peace initiative in an election year faced severe challenges, but agreed we must continue the search for common ground. Whitehead also met with Minister of Interior Basri,⁴ who welcomed increased cooperation in combatting narcotics production and trafficking. (S)
