Files. Until January 1963, the Department of State used a
decimal file system for its central indexed records. For Berlin the
most important numbers under this system are:

- 762.00: general reporting on Germany
- 762.0221: the status of Berlin
- 962.72: access to Berlin
- In February 1963, the Department of State changed to a
subject-numeric system. Under this system, the most significant
files for Berlin are:
- POL US–USSR: general U.S.-Soviet relations
- POL 7 US/Kennedy: general correspondence of the President
- POL 28 Berlin: the status of Berlin
- POL 38–9 and 10: access to Berlin
- Lot Files. Documents from the central files
