Washington, January 19,
1956.
Ambassador Conant came to see me to bring me personal messages from Chancellor Adenauer2 and the report that the Chancellor’s health, at 81, seems to be improving daily. He also expressed to me his (Conant’s) great concern in establishing in Europe a six-power community for handling of activities in nuclear science in that region. He points out that in some of these countries activities could well go underground if we did not move in the direction of the community development. I agreed with him.
