Editorial Note

Chancellor Adenauer visited the United States October 27–November 2, 1954, staying in Washington the first 4 days and in New York, where he received an honorary degree from Columbia University, for the remainder of the trip. In addition to the meetings described in the three memoranda, infra, and Documents 255 and 256, and the signing of a Treaty of Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation on October 29, the Chancellor attended a variety of functions which are outlined in a memorandum by GER/GPA, dated November 10. (033.62A11/11–1054) During the several meetings in Washington, President Eisenhower, Secretary Dulles, and the Chancellor issued various statements concerning the visit.
