Memorandum of Conversation, by the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern, South Asian, and African Affaires (Hare)
The First Secretary of the Burmese Embassy called on the Officer in Charge of Burma–Ceylon Affairs late yesterday afternoon under instructions to inform the Department that his Government had concluded that, in view of recent developments in Yunnan Province, it must act immediately to extend recognition to the Chinese Communist regime. The Embassy representative had no information as to the exact timing of his Government’s move, but the tenor of his instructions was such that Burmese recognition will probably be forthcoming within the next few days.73
