The Ambassador in Turkey (Steinhardt) to the Secretary of State
[Received 10:31 p.m.]
251. British Ambassador22 informed me today that in connection with furnishing of supplies to Turkey he had received instructions from his Government that this subject would be dealt with in Ankara, with the exception that requirements which British authorities do not undertake to supply from the United Kingdom will be considered by the United States authorities in Washington, if necessary, with the British or Turkish Embassies.
[Page 693]The Ambassador’s instructions further provided that he is to endeavor to induce Turkish Government to accept this procedure.
He requested me to advise him if and when I receive instructions to like effect.
