302. I left with de Gaulle today a paraphrase of the Department’s 136, August 21.51 De Gaulle will soon address me a note containing his observations. He expressed his great satisfaction that the United States Government is taking an active interest in the present difficulty. He said he was somewhat pained that the Department appeared somewhat to doubt sincerity of the French spheres [promises of?] independence. It is quite possible that he will request American mediation.
Repeated to Cairo.
