Sir Ronald Campbell40 called to see me this morning at his request.
Sir Ronald discussed in a desultory fashion the general war picture. I spoke to him of the general nature of the reports the Department had recently been receiving from Syria and of my fear, as repeatedly expressed to Lord Halifax and, through Ambassador Winant, to the British Foreign Office, that conditions were going to get worse in Syria unless the British Government made some effort at adjustment of the controversy raging between the French and British representatives in that country. Sir Ronald said he was familiar with the views of this Government as so expressed and that he feared, in view of the attitude of Mr. Churchill, that there was little likelihood of any change being made for some time to come in the British representation in Syria.
