Memorandum by the Chief of the Division of Far Eastern Affairs (Hamilton)
[Washington,] August 20,
1937.
Mr. Gaucheron of the French Embassy telephoned this morning and said that he wished to supplement the information contained in the informal memorandum which he gave me on August 19 by stating that the French Government would be prepared, if such action were needed to make effective the British proposal, to furnish a small detachment for use also in the International Settlement at Shanghai.50
I thanked Mr. Gaucheron for his courtesy in communicating this information.
