22. Legation’s 21, January 16, 10 a.m. Following from American Consul at Hankow:
“January 15, 5 p.m. No information Szechwan developments. I telegraphed General Liu Hsiang today giving names of places where Americans reside in Szechwan and requesting information whether any of those places dangerous for Americans in order that I may inform them accordingly. I also requested him to instruct by telegraph local authorities to protect Americans and insure their safe conduct to places of safety should it become necessary for them to leave.
I am sending by air mail third warning letter to one American in each mission station and institution in Szechwan outside Chungking. Warning telegrams sent to Suifu, Nanki and Kiangtsing.”
U.S.S. Palos Chungking reports January 15 that general opinion there is less pessimistic.
