The Chargé in Liberia (Hall) to the Secretary of State
[Received 4:59 p.m.]
86. Mass meeting was held yesterday by ex-President Howard, Chief Justice Johnson, Gray,27 and Faulkner and adopted resolutions condemning the present administration for its part in the slave trade and further that the people of Liberia desired the officials responsible removed from office.
[Paraphrase.] In spite of the Liberian Government’s determined opposition, the meeting was held and there were about 200 persons in attendance. While it is doubted that this meeting will have any direct effect, it does show the general feeling of a large portion of the population. Despatch follows by pouch.28 [End paraphrase.]
