[Page 807] Department replied that if there is room after Americans have been cared for Buford will be glad to extend assistance to British subjects, and has so instructed the Buford. You may inform the Americans who approached you and the consulates on the west coast that Department will endeavor to have Buford similarly instructed regarding Spaniards and refugees of other nationalities.
