Mr. Newberry to
Said Pacha.
Legation of the United States,
Constantinople, October 10,
1892.
No. 126.]
Excellency: I am instructed to request of Your
Excellency information as to the final disposition of the five men
arrested and imprisoned for the burning of the house of the American
missionary Bartlett. If these men are not yet brought to trial I should
be pleased to know the time and place of their trial and the nature of
the charges to be brought against them.
I am also instructed to request information as to whether or no any
Turkish officials of Bourdour have been reprimanded, having in mind
specially the governor of Bourdour, the chief of police, and the
president of the municipality, on account of whose negative actions in
some cases and open hostility in others, encouraged certain people in
Bourdour to commit various outrages against the person and property of
Bartlett. I should be pleased to have a reply to this as soon as
possible.
Permit me, etc.,
H. R. Newberry,
Chargé d’Affaires ad
