No. 345.
Mr. Nelson to Mr. Fish.

No. 617.]

Sir: I inclose herewith a copy of a note which I have to-day addressed to the Mexican government, demanding, in pursuance of the instructions contained in your No. 273, of the 1st instant, the prompt return of Abraham Gonzales, kidnaped in Texas by one Pedro A. Valdes, and the punishment of the perpetrator of that outrage.

I am, &c,

THOMAS H. NELSON.
[Inclosure in No. 617.]

Mr. Nelson to Mr. Lafragua.

Sir: The Government of the United States has been informed by its commercial agent at Piedras Negras, in Coahuila, that one Pedro A. Valdes, calling himself a colonel, and understood to be an officer in the military service of Mexico, had organized upon American soil a party of men with whom he invaded that State, having previously kidnaped in Texas one Abraham Gonzales, whom he carried with him into Mexico.

I am instructed to lose no time in laying this fact before the government of Mexico, not doubting that your excellency will cause the speediest measures to be taken for the release of the said Gonzalez, and for making the kidnaper Valdes sensible of the displeasure of his government.

I have the honor to remain, with the highest respect, your excellency’s obedient servant,

THOMAS A. NELSON.
