51. Letter From President Johnson to Prime Minister Menzies1

Dear Mr. Prime Minister:

I have read with great care your letter of this morning concerning the effects on Australia of our balance of payments program.2 I have asked the Secretary of State, the Secretary of the Treasury, and the Secretary of Commerce to give the problems you raise the careful and understanding attention which is traditional in our relations as close allies and good friends. I expect to receive their report during the course of next week and shall write you further about these difficult matters at that time.

Sincerely,
