110. Memorandum of Conversation0
Washington,
May 23, 1958.
SUBJECT
- Indonesian Situation
PARTICIPANTS
- Mr. Moekarto, Indonesian Ambassador
- The Secretary
- Mr. Mein, Director, Office of Southwest Pacific Affairs
In a discussion of the Indonesian situation the Secretary said he wished to assure the Ambassador that we are seeking to prevent acts from neighboring countries designed in some form to help those who seem to be trying to stop the drift of Indonesia toward communism. He said that we cannot go on exerting this pressure, and he is not sure we will wish to do so, unless something is done by the Indonesian Government to stop the drift. The Secretary said he hoped, therefore, that the government would take such action as is possible to curb the trend.
