293. Editorial Note
The Conference on Antarctica met at Washington, October 15–December 1, with representatives of Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Chile, France, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, the Soviet Union, the Union of South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States in attendance. Ambassador Herman Phleger, head of the U.S. Delegation, was elected chairman of the conference. The first plenary session was held October 15 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Department of the Interior.
