London, August 30, 1950—6 p.m.

1287. UK FonOff informs Embassy they have decided to cease publication of British Ally in Moscow with next issue and public announcement to that effect will be made by HMG within a few days pending which this information remains confidential.

Main motivation of British is economy since production of magazine in Moscow rather expensive. Circulation practically impossible and it no longer earns anything. British would have preferred Soviets to ban it and for that reason put “hot” material in recent issues but without desired effect.
