848. Embassy informed Communist troops began entering city by Northwest gate at approximately 5 a. m. 24th. Desultory shots exchanged during night in streets between emergency police force and marauders have virtually ceased. No disorders in neighborhood Embassy compounds. No American nationals have applied to Embassy for permission move [into] Chancery compound, despite notice circulated 23d. Embassy personnel and offices secure.
