17. ReDeptel to Shanghai 119, January 22. Warning as reported to ConGen was “All missionaries are sent out to China for espionage and to report military movements. We want to get rid of all you young fellows.” Missionaries of military age are especially suspected. See Hankow’s confidential despatch 55, December 27 to Embassy, copy to Department; and ditto 3, January 11.⁶
