833. Dept informed by Paris of French Govts oral agreement to tripartite Allied supervision Greek elections. Dept assumes that Paris has so informed Athens by direct telegram in answer to Athens telegram no. 2 Aug 7 [17] to Paris, repeated to Dept as 852.⁹⁶ In view information from Brit Emb that Bevin intends to make announcement in Parliament Aug 20 and that Greek Govt has already given its agreement to Brit Emb in Athens, Dept authorizes Moscow to inform Soviet FonOff (reDeptel 1861 Aug 18, repeated to Athens, Paris, and London). Dept authorizes Athens to approach Greek Govt, if it has not already done so, and also to express regret that events beyond control of Dept have prevented prior notification of Greek Govt.

Dept intends to release to press tomorrow Aug 20 statement contained in Deptel of Aug 9.⁹⁷
