Memorandum by Major General Patrick J. Hurley
[Yenan,] 8 November, 1944.
Theodore White, correspondent for Time and Life, told me that he had just talked to Chairman Mao and Mao had told him that there [Page 674] was not any possible chance of an agreement between him and Chiang Kai-shek. White told me many of the reasons why Mao should not agree with the National Government. White’s whole conversation was definitely against the mission with which I am charged.
