The Ambassador in Greece (MacVeagh) to the Secretary of State

129. I have authorized the Foreign Office to deny reports printed in yesterday’s Leftist press according to which I had protested to [Page 143] my British colleague both verbally and in writing against British interference in Greek affairs. These inventions [interventions?] would appear not unconnected with the recent publication by the same press of an alleged statement by the Secretary concerning our Government’s policy of nonintervention (see my No. 120 of December 3, 6 p.m.) and perhaps represent a policy to play up America’s neutral attitude in contrast to British intervention here. While doing all I can not to allow this Mission to become involved in internal affairs, I have also been careful so far as possible not to embarrass our British Allies and my British colleague realizes this as well as the extreme delicacy of the position involved.
