Memorandum of Telephone Conversation, by the Chief of the Division of Near Eastern Affairs (Merriam)

[Washington,] April 24, 1944.

With reference to the attached memoranda of April 18 and 22, 1944,45 from NEA46 to the Secretary, having been informed by Mr. [Page 104] Brown47 of S48 that on April 23 the Secretary agreed that we should reply to the Greek request in the sense of the final paragraph of NEA’s memorandum of April 22, at Mr. Alling’s request I called up Mr. Philon49 of the Greek Embassy and communicated the substance of that paragraph to him.

Mr. Philon was a little puzzled at first, but finally appeared to understand. He asked to be kept informed of developments and I said that we would pass on to him all the information reaching us regarding this matter that we could make available.
