Memorandum of Conversation, by the Secretary of State
Participants: | Secretary of State Hull, The British Ambassador, Lord Halifax, and Mr. Harold Butler60 |
The British Ambassador called at my request.
He was accompanied by Mr. Harold Butler, who desired to come in to pay his respects. There was the usual exchange of greetings and of welcome.
I handed to the Ambassador a memorandum regarding the Free French situation, a copy of which is attached hereto.61 He said that he would send it to Mr. Eden with the request that, if Great Britain agrees to the proposal, he could then take the matter up with General De Gaulle and make him familiar with it with a view to a complete agreement between the Governments of Great Britain and the United States and the French National Committee.
