The Ambassador in the Soviet Union (Steinhardt) to the Secretary of State

1101. My 1094, June 5, 9 p.m.81 The Commissariat for Foreign Affairs notified me today that the Supreme Soviet has granted permission for Mrs. Scott to renounce Soviet citizenship and that she and the two children will be allowed to accompany Scott when he leaves Moscow by the Trans-Siberian Railway on June 10th.83

  2. John Scott had resided for 9 years in the Soviet Union, most recently employed as correspondent for the London News Chronicle. On June 4 he was notified of his expulsion from the Soviet Union for “persistently sending out libelous articles regarding the Soviet Union”. He was originally allowed 3 days to leave; the Embassy at Moscow interceded for an extension of the time (which was granted until June 11) and for permission to allow his wife Mariya (Masha) and two children to go with him.↩
