The President of the American Steamship Owners’ Association (Baker) to the Special Assistant to the Secretary of State (Hewes)

Dear Mr. Hewes: I have your letter of November 23.67 I have received this morning a cable from Mr. Cleminson,68 stating that the preliminary meeting for a discussion of the agenda of the proposed conference on international rationalization of shipping will be held Monday, January 14.69 Mr. Cleminson was hoping that a meeting might be held December 10, but this was too early for us to be prepared and have our delegates in London. We are having a meeting of the General Foreign Trades Group on Tuesday for a further discussion of the subject.
We are very grateful for your interest in shipping affairs, and I can assure you that this Association and its members will cooperate with you in any manner possible to the fullest extent.
