Senator Reed Smoot to the Assistant Secretary of State (Castle)

Dear Mr. Castle: This will acknowledge the receipt of your letter of August 26, 1929,44 reminding me of Mr. Stimson’s letter of June 26 calling attention to certain sections of the pending tariff bill deemed contrary to existing treaties of the United States.

It is true that no change has been made in paragraphs 812, 1402, 1641, 1650 and 1687.

Kindly let me know if any foreign country has made a protest to our State Department against the paragraphs named in your letter. If so, please give me the name or names of the countries doing so. I shall then ask the Finance Committee for the consideration of the paragraphs named in your letter of the 26th.

Yours sincerely,

Reed Smoot
