Memorandum of Agreement Supplemental to the Agreement between the Allied Governments and the Icelandic Government1

Memorandum of Agreement made this ninth day of September, 1918, between the Standard Oil Company (New Jersey), of 26, Broadway, New York City, United States of America (by Montagu Piesse, its agent) of the first part, the Icelandic Government (by Björn Sigurdsson, its agent) of the second part, Hid Islenska Steinoliuhlutaf-jelag, of Reykjavik, Iceland (by the said Montagu Piesse, its agent) of the third part, being supplemental to an agreement dated the 23rd day of May, 1918, and made between the British, French and Italian Governments (therein called the Allied Governments) of the one part, and the Icelandic Government of the other part (hereinafter called the Principal Agreement: this Principal Agreement having been concurred in by United States War Trade Board on the date first mentioned above).

Witnesseth that in pursuance of article 3, section B, and the fourth schedule,2 part 2, of the principal agreement the Standard Oil Company (New Jersey) hereby agree with the Icelandic Government to supply Iceland’s requirements of petroleum products to Hid Islenska Steinoliuhlutaf-jelag from the date hereof up to the 1st May, 1919, upon the following terms and conditions:—

1. Quantity to be 5,692 metric tons refined oil, and 74 metric tons United States motor gasoline—to be apportioned by grades as required by the party of the third part, at the following prices:—

  • Refined oil—
    • Water white, 63.41 ore per gallon (6½ lb.) including barrelling.
    • Standard white, 59.68 ore per gallon (6½ lb.) including barrelling.
    • Petrolite white, 38.75 ore per gallon (6½ lb.) including barrelling.
    • United States motor gasoline, 130.55 ore per gallon (6 lb.) including cases of two five-gallon cans.

Price to be f.o.b. steamer at New York.

2. Delivery to be to steamers furnished by Icelandic Government to Hid Islenska Steinoliuhlutaf-jelag. Buyers to notify sellers of names and positions of steamers, and quantity required by each steamer, at least fourteen days before the date at which they shall be ready to load. Freight to be provided to lift the whole quantity before the 1st May, 1919—otherwise unfulfilled part of this contract to be cancelled.

Customary loading certificate to be final as to quality.

Bill of lading weight to be final.

3. Payment to be made in kroner by Hid Islenska Steinoliuhlutaf-jelag to Hambro Export Account at Island Banki, Reykjavik, upon advice of steamers loading and prior to clearance from New York.

4. This agreement shall be subject to an agreement approved by the United States War Trade Board being concluded between the Icelandic Government and Hid Islenska Steinoliuhlutaf-jelag containing the terms and conditions of sale and distribution in Iceland of the products herein mentioned.
