Firing commenced again at daybreak. Ships now shelling southern part of city. Large force men landed from Admiral Badger’s fleet before daylight. Copies of proclamation issued by Admiral Fletcher requesting cooperation at once of Alcalde, Jefe Político and [Page 481] populace of Vera Cruz establishing order. Have sent messengers to locate these officials and every effort is being made to that end. Unable yet communicate with Embassy but expect to this morning as telegraph is working. Major Butler arrived with his command during night from Tampico and is now ashore. Expected city will be quieted this morning. No further information yet as to exact number killed and wounded. Battleships Florida, Utah, Arkansas, Vermont, New Hampshire, New Jersey, South Carolina, transport Prairie, collier Orion now off this port. Transport Hancock reported due.
