Dear Colonel Hay: On behalf of my mother
and the family I beg through you to offer to the President of the
United States our most grateful thanks for the kind message of
sympathy sent to us on his part and that of the American people.
We see in it the recognition of the abiding interest which my father
cherished in the welfare and wonderful progress of America, and we
value it all the more because it has been sent by the President at a
time of inevitable pressure and absorption.
With our best wishes for the prosperity of the President and the
American people,
