Sir: I had the honor to receive in due course your note of the 17th instant, communicating to me the gratifying intelligence conveyed to you by a telegram received by you on that day from the Sublime Porte, that the security of missionaries is completely assured, and that all reports to the contrary are to be denied.
The information you conveyed was coincident with reports from the United States minister at Constantinople of the sacking and destruction of the buildings of the American mission station at Harpoot, in connection with an appalling massacre of native Christians, and I wish to know whether your telegraphic advices convey authentic information as to those occurrences.
