Mr. Terrell to Mr. Olney.
[Telegram.]
Pera, November 17,
1895.
Jewett telegraphs massacres have begun at Marsovan and Amasia. Poche telegraphs bloody conflict at Aintab. Great fear is entertained at Aleppo. Anxiety of friends of missionaries might be allayed if the Department of State would authorize public statement that I have not needed Department orders to awaken vigilance, as published, but demanded and secured orders, since renewed and executed, to protect Americans everywhere before any massacres began.
Terrell.
