Sir: In answer to your No. 409, of April 4, regarding an apprehended massacre of Christians in Turkey, and the proposed visit of the Marblehead to Smyrna, Alexandretta, and Beirut, I have to inform you that for the last three weeks tranquility seems to exist in the provinces, and I see no cause to fear present danger. The pledges given me for energetic official action, I feel sure, have been complied with.
