No. 564.
Mr. Frelinghuysen to Mr. Wallace.

No. 115.]

Sir: Your No. 245, of the 12th ultimo, in relation to the revision of the Turkish tariff and our treaty of 1862 with that Government, has been received, and your note to the minister for foreign affairs upon the subject meets with the Department’s approval. While we are satisfied that under the strict engagements of the treaty the fourth period of seven years has already begun to run, we are not averse to making such revision as is suggested in the concluding part of your note, and bringing our tariff engagements with Turkey into harmony with her like engagements with other powers before the end of the now current period of seven years.

I am, &c.,

FRED’K T. FRELINGHUYSEN.
