It is very gratifying to have met with so generous a response to my appeal
for assistance, which was addressed to the Americans in Paris. It will be
observed, however, that the contributions have not been confined to American
citizens, but that considerable sums have been received from the French
people, including 5,000 francs from the Marshal President and Madame
MacMahon.
The sum of about 10,000 francs was forwarded directly to the Howard
Association, and did not pass through the legation. This, together with the
$10,000 sent to the Secretary of State, makes the entire contribution to
this date about 60,000 francs.
Should the suffering continue, an additional amount will be collected and
forwarded. A number of official entertainments are now contemplated in aid
of this fund.
I have had the honer to thank, in the name of the Secretary of State, all the
contributors, and, in a special manner, the President of the French Republic
and Madame MacMahon.
