Mr. Clay to Mr. Seward
Sir: Yesterday I received from the directeur d’Invalide Russie a note saying that by the order of the minister of war he sent me several numbers of that journal, comparing the Polish and confederate insurrections, and expressing the sympathy which Russia feels for America.
I shall forward these journals, together with the letter, by the first opportunity, to be placed in the archives of the State Department. The good feeling of the people of Russia, and the Russian government, is displayed in many ways, and is greatly heightened by the cordial reception given by our countrymen to the Russian officers. Her Imperial Majesty and the Grand Duke Heritier expressed themselves to be gratified at the hospitality shown the Russian officers, and at the ball given on the 24th instant, at the palace, the Emperor used very marked terms of satisfaction at the more intimate relations growing up between the two countries. * * *
I am, truly, your obedient servant,
Hon. William H. Seward, &c., &c., &c.
