Mr. Dayton to Mr. Seward
Sir: Your despatch No. 341, which communicates the answer of our government to the complaint made here in respect to the paper given by Mr. Adams to Messrs. Zirman and Howell, dated 9th April last, was duly received. I immediately called upon Mr. Drouyn de l’Huys, and read to him your despatch, and likewise the copy of the one enclosed, sent to Mr. Koerner, our minister at Madrid, dated February 28, last. When I had closed reading these papers, Mr. Drouyn de l’Huys expressed himself very kindly, saying he was much gratified by the contents; and as respects the paper given by Mr. Adams, he added immediately, “Let it be forgotten.” We may, therefore, consider this little diplomatic disturbance as a something passed and gone.
I am, sir, your obedient servant,
Hon. W. H. Seward, Secretary of State, &c.
