Legislation
Access to public records preserved in the National Archives of Hungary is regulated by the Archives Act of 1995. They provide for a duel track in dealing with records from pre and post-democratic Hungary. Records created before May 1990 are available to the public. Records created after May 2, 1990 will be made available to the public 30 years after their creation.

Researchers should contact the archives at least 8 days in advance with a letter of introduction from their institution or university.
