285. Editorial Note
The Democratic Party held its nominating and national convention in the Municipal Theater in Seoul November 26–27. The 970 delegates in a narrow vote selected Cho Pyong-ok as the presidential candidate of the party and Chang Myon as the vice presidential candidate. Chang Myon was subsequently elected Senior Supreme Committeeman over Cho Pyong-ok by a vote of 518 to 447. In assessing the conventions in telegram 381 from Seoul, November 27, the Embassy noted that the convention ended on a note of harmony, with Chang and Cho calling on the delegates to put the bitterness of past factionalism aside in the interest of unity and a strong presidential campaign.
